As it is practiced in the Mithila region of Bihar and Nepal, it is called Mithila or Madhubani art. Madhubani Painting had started in the Ramayan period, Raja Janak pf Mithila in Bihar commissioned artists to make paintings at the time of the wedding of his daughter Sita to Lord Ram. Initially women folk of the village drew this art form on the walls of their home, as an illustration of their thoughts, hope, and dreams. but the traditional base of freshly plastered mud walls has been replaced by cloth, handmade paper, and canvas.
